“I’m not sure if “Desert New-Wave” is an actual genre, but that’s the perfect way to describe Austin’s Canvas People. It creates an alternative music sound that can only be found in Texas, and Canvas People have managed to create something refreshing.” – Austin KUTX 98.9
Austin, TX – August 23, 2019 – With new single “Handle On My History”, The Canvas People explore darker territory both thematically and sonically. Over cascading guitar riffs, fuzzy bass tones, and thumping toms, lead singer Kyle Taylor pensively delivers the vocals with conviction and acceptance. The newest single off the group’s upcoming LP Garden Party, “Handle On My History” is the four piece’s most rock-driven to date. It showcases the melodic, guitar-driven hallmarks the group has come to be known for, while segueing a more pronounced, anthemic rock-style.
Ultimately, the track delivers a message of hope about one’s willingness to tell his or her own story. It reminds ourselves of our own agency with respect to how those individual stores end. Taylor conveys this idea with the hook of the song, “Don’t be so blue, ’cause I write the ending and I’m choosing to believe. My love is gold, my love is magic. I’ve got a handle on my history.”
The accompanying music video further explores the theme of hope. A determined young woman defies her mysteries captures in search of individuality. Director Keaton Davis captures the narrative with a visually inspiring jailbreak, car chase, and dirt bike sequence to boot. “Handle On My History” is the fourth single off The Canvas People’s upcoming LP, Garden Party, to be released September 13, 2019.
